My students need access to basic chemistry activities to provide hands-on and inquiry-based learning activities essential to a high-quality chemistry course. Chemistry is a newly offered science course for the school!
I am constantly welcoming new high school students throughout the year into the science classes I teach at my district's alternative high school. My students are incredibly diverse, from their personal and academic backgrounds, personal struggles and challenges, as well as personalities, interests, abilities, and talents. Each student has a unique story behind their joining our school and becoming a member of one or more of the science classes I teach.
While my students come together to create an incredibly diverse learning environment, there is a shared sense of curiosity about the world and a passion for exploring this curiosity with hands-on, interactive and creative learning experiences that unifies my classes into families.
The curiosity my students bring is what inspires me to find as many new opportunities for them as I can to explore the world through a scientific lens. I love using my knowledge of science to engage my students and hopefully make their final years of high school productive, enjoyable and memorable.
My Project
While chemistry classes are a staple of traditional high schools, not all alternative schools have the staff and ability to offer this exciting, college preparatory course to its students. Our school has the licensed teacher (me) and room for a chemistry class to call home, but lacks the basic equipment and chemical supplies that take the study of chemistry out of the textbook and into the lab. The requested chemistry kits focus on main course themes: the properties of matter, changes in matter, and chemical reactions, and will bring much-needed resources to the class.
It is my goal to create a chemistry class that is hands-on and embraces student curiosity.
The interactive lessons further promote inquiry and proper application of the scientific method. These kits make future use easy and practical since they are easily refilled as needed without a lot of additional expense.
