This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a Title 1 school - 86% of our kids are economically disadvantaged, and 73% are English Language Learners. My students mainly speak Spanish and Burmese/Chin.

These are students and their families coming to the USA to avoid persecution in their home countries.

I want to build my kids a library because studies show if a student can read in their native language, the literacy skills transfer to their new language. By having books available in their native language, it will encourage them to read, enhancing their literacy skills.

My Project

The Captain Underpants books are a big hit with (mostly) the boys at this age. Judy Moody books are usually picked up by my female students, and the Funny Bones books are for the lower levels readers that still want to laugh.

Humor and laughing keeps kids entertained and engaged in their reading during SSR (though it's not too SILENT with these books!)

By providing all levels of books in both languages, we can ensure that these kids develop a love for learning, practice their English, and become literate and fluent, all at the same time (multi-tasking!) We have some early readers in Spanish, but I want to engage the higher level learners as well.
