My Students

My students are excellent people, worldwide learners, and deserve a chance to meet up with other Latin students in one of the best field trips ever, put on by my professional group, or CLASSCONN, "Classical Teachers of CT," who have been putting on CT State Latin Day for decades. We have made Latin Day a real 'perk' for Latin students only, knowing that it can and does increase enrollments in a district. There is so much fun at Latin Day: food, games, lectures, Roman Army Soldiers in full regalia, Drama presentations/contests, costume contests, and all kinds of other contests, including banners, standards and dozens of varied competitions in the Project Tent. My students have always brought home prizes and ribbons for chariots, banners, art work, and in just about every category --- they have succeeded. Where else would you see students lining up to take tests? Latin Day! I help run the testing pavilion, where students can choose from an array of tests: derivatives, history, mythology, etc., etc. My students are eager to go to Latin Day again, so we need the money to charter the mini bus and some money to make some new Togas! Euge -Hurrah!

My Project

This day is a day that all Latin students look forward to, as they will be participating in the 'cultural Olympics' for Roman Culture and Latin students: so many sports [swimming, basketball, soccer, tug of war, volleyball, tennis, track, etc., etc.], lectures about astronomy, mythology, legal Latin, medical Latin, theatrical performances, costuming, chariot building, judging, and racing; banner-making, judging and using in processions; standard making; join the Roman Army w/commands, "Jeopardy" trivia quiz games, academic short multiple choice tests of all kinds: mythology, derivatives, history; translating, reciting; art projects that fill an entire wing of the Main Hall - of all types, including now-videos and technology, Roman barbecue and foods, and regular foods of all kinds: breakfast, lunch, and desserts; students will identify with other Latin students throughout the state and share a camaraderie, and will experience "Roman Culture," with teachers and students 'speaking Latin' during the day, at the dinner tables, etc. --- it is truly a 'step back in time,' and so necessary to connect students to the target language, just like immersion programs work, to the same degree, with modern Romance Languages. My professional group, concerning which I have been a member of for the past 2+ decades, has created Latin Day, to make it exciting, so that students cannot possibly 'do everything' in one year --- they should be inspired to come back every year, which usually happens with 2,000 students attending! It is awesome and my students deserve and look forward to attending this major event for Latin students every year. A theme for each year will be displayed on banners and togas (all contests, too!), bringing in the next year of Latin learning! Euge --- Hooray!
