it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
At our school, we have many students who are new to the United States. They are eager to learn, and also eager to share what makes their countries special and the things they love from back home. One of those things is music!
In a society that pushes so hard for immigrants to assimilate and "be American," it's important that our students get a chance to share and embrace what they know as well, and to see that we value who they are and where they came from.
In my music classroom, that looks like learning about the music that students grew up listening to - for many of these students, it's dance music like bachata and merengue.
These kinds of music are heavy in hand-percussion, and as a new program we have none. Patting our legs and clapping only go so far, and it would mean the world to my students to be able to play the actual instruments.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
