Laser Focus Learning

My students need a laser cutting machine that can accurately cut plastic, paper, or wood to create prototypes of their designs in our first ever engineering class.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a traditional high school in an urban district, and the school has recently left turn-around status. The students at the school are about 90% minority, and over 80% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. In addition, over 42% of the students are classified as English Language Learners. My students need to see themselves as STEM masters so that they choose a career in STEM. The U.S. needs more STEM graduates and especially STEM graduates that look like my students!

I'm on a mission to create a STEM lab that facilitates student learning!

I want to purchase a laser cutter so we can continue making this STEM dream a reality!

My Project

Access to complex computer controlled machinery is a very important factor in understanding the full depth of the current industry design process. A laser cutting machine takes up a very small amount of space and can be used by any student. The school does not have a shop facility so there is no way for students to create physical representations of their design work. A laser cutting machine can be used to cut out any sort of light weight material to within .05 mm of design specifications. Students can actually create any sort of model or prototype and have accurate enough cut outs to assemble multi-part designs, such as interlocking gears or joints.

Three dimensional designs can easily be created by any student through the use of computer design software.

the ability to make designs come to life in a three dimensional, physical representation can easily and safely happen through the use of a laser cutting machine.
