The library is literally the center of our school community. An open, warm and inviting space with vaulted ceilings and floor to ceiling windows that look out upon the playground. This is the space where 600+ students from Head Start, Developmental Preschool on up to sixth grade gather once a week. Some to rest, some engage books while others create projects or dive into technology.
Our students deserve every opportunity to succeed.
Our neighborhood consists of immigrants, refugees, working class, middle class and the working poor.
We are African-American, African, Latinax, Asian, Southeast Asian, Vietnamese, Pacific Islander, Samoan, Somali, Native American and white. 78.6% of our students receive free and reduced lunches. 99.9% of our students love the library.
My Project
I wish I was kidding while I write this to you. I am not though. We have a collection of sports books in our library that are seriously outdated. Players and teams that played when I was a child. The 1980's were great. But our sports collection in the library needs an update.
As a new librarian this came to my attention while tracking down some sports books in the library.
We found a small collection. Inside that small collection was books about sports from the 17th century. Okay so that is hyperbole, but I am not lying when I say the books were seriously outdated. And that brings me here making this request of you.
When students see books that actually represent things that they are interested in, celebrities they see in a show, athletes they watch at home with their family on a Sunday, those books have the power to peek their interest and invite them inside. By supporting the sports collection you are supporting students who may not want to read about dragons but instead all the stats of their favorite player, the rules of the game, or learn about how an athlete overcame adversity to become who they are today.
This collection of books focuses on sports. Biographies, top ten lists, baseball, basketball, football, rules, and stats. Both men and women's sports. Most importantly it updates the collection to provide students with a sports collection of players and athletes they can recognize.
