I teach a vibrant, curious, and determined group of 8th graders! My students make up three different sections of 8th grade inclusion classes at a public middle school in Brooklyn, NY. An inclusion (or integrated co-teaching) classroom has a diverse blend of students with mixed abilities. My co-teacher and I work hard to differentiate units and lessons because we believe that every student is entitled to a high quality learning experience, and that achieving that requires supporting our students' unique learning needs. Having access to computers in the classroom would revolutionize the ways in which we are able to differentiate for the wide range of needs our students have. Our school doesn't have the budget for our technology needs. Your donation will help to change this!
My Project
Chromebooks in the classroom wouldn't support just one project, but many. In fact, each and every day they would be used to support our diverse group of learners. Some of the ways in which laptop access in the classroom would help us differentiate instruction for our students include:
-First and foremost, research and writing assignments will be revolutionized!
Students will be able to draft in google docs as opposed to handwriting and typing papers somewhere else. This will allow students to share their assignments electronically with teachers in order to get more detailed feedback and individualized support, allowing my co-teacher and I to conduct valuable writing conferences with more students.
-Using amazing resources like NewsELA, we will be able to differentiate reading levels within the same topic and eliminate the need to print and hand out specially leveled shared texts.
-During research projects/papers students can go beyond what is available to them within the classroom to support their learning.
-The use of computers for individual and group work will improve and increase student attention and focus.
-Students who require audiobook access will finally have it in the classroom.
-Students with dysgraphia and related disabilities will be able to use a computer for their assignments.
