Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am an occupational therapist in a diverse, lower-income school district in Washington state. My students are in special education self-contained classrooms. My students are inquisitive, and unique; they are fun-loving and eager to learn. I work with students ranging from preschool through eighth grade.

The majority of the students I serve are from lower-income households and have limited access to needed sensory materials; they are not defined by their conditions which include: autism, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, as well as "general education" learning challenges: your donation will help address critical sensory needs: oral motor, sensory aversion, sensory seeking, vestibular feedback and heavy work activities.

With a focus on equal access for all students, my primary goal as an occupational therapist within a public school setting is to ensure that each student can participate in educational activities regardless of their physical, cognitive or behavioral limitations.

Every student has a very unique way of learning and/or accessing materials which may require adaptive equipment, alternative seating, sensory motor materials or behavioral strategies to meet his or her needs.

It is so exciting to work with such a broad range of student ages and ability levels within a variety of school environments.

My Project

My students will benefit from the laptop in that I will use it for everything..lesson plans, creative projects, parent communication, presentations in the classroom, documentation of care provided, communication with parents, documentation, virtual care and so much more! My current laptop crashes when I am engaged in virtual meetings with students or parents, and when I am documenting or writing emails to my parents to update them about their child's progress. I can hear my distance learning students, see my students, connect with my students and create material for my students. I will use this laptop to write OT lesson plans and further my own educational learning. Because of our switch to virtual learning, I believe that this up to date computer will allow me to be more successful as an educator.

My students deserve the most they can get from my time, my current laptop crashes regularly and won't permit me to document or communicate with parents regularly; this laptop will allow me to provide access to digital resources and make typing, writing and learning more engaging and fun.

This laptop will make learning from home exciting for my students because I can provide them better materials and instruction.

Due to the current pandemic and the resulting inconsistency of in-person learning, students have not been able to maintain their neurodevelopmental readiness for learning. With access to multiple types of equipment and supplies, students will be able to improve postural control and self-regulation for improved sustained attention to task during structured learning activities.
