My Students

Our school is located in a low income area of the city. I teach many students from diverse backgrounds who are being raised in unique family situations including shared housing, split custody, and military families with deployed parents. Due to these circumstances, these children already come to school facing many challenges.

When they walk into our room, I want them to feel safe and loved because it is then that they are ready to learn and grow!

They are busy, active and brilliant little people who have different learning needs and abilities. My job is to meet these needs in an equitable and engaging way and give them a positive educational foundation on which to build their educational future.

My Project

Going back to school face to face during a pandemic in Kindergarten is challenging. All of the materials that help make the classroom welcoming and inviting have been removed. I'd like to give these youngest students some choices of where to learn and still do so safely! Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. These lap desks would allow students to choose a location in the classroom where they are most comfortable, while still maintaining a safe distance from their classmates. I have noticed significant differences in my students learning when they are given a choice in their seating. They take ownership of their work and work space, and are more engaged than when they are just sitting at a desk or table.

My students will remain safe but will also be engaged when they are given a choice of where to work, and the classroom will still look like a fun and inviting place to be!

The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices.

I have seen how choice can positively affect my students work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help them realize our classroom is still a fun, inviting place to grow and learn!
