My Students

My 6th and 7th grade students form the founding classes of our charter school. As the first group of students at our school, they are hardworking and flexible, and have paved the path for all of the classes below them. We are a Mandarin immersion school, and through years of incredible effort these students have mastered Mandarin as well as English, consistently placing at or near the top of the county on state and national tests, as well as leading in language skills among Mandarin immersion students across the country.

Equally impressive is their enthusiasm for project-based learning.

Last year these students entered middle school and the administration committed to creating a design lab class to engage them in design thinking and project-based learning. Our lab is small but growing, and the students have created amazing projects ranging from pinball machines to simple circuits. They look forward to diving into more advanced projects as 6th and 7th graders, and applying their design skills create amazing cross-curricular projects.

My Project

I teach at a Mandarin immersion charter school. Each year our students celebrate the lunar new year with music and dance performances. As the science and design lab teacher, this year I want students to see how STEM connects to this cultural celebration.

In China and Taiwan, the lunar new year is followed by a lantern festival.

In design lab students will create wire-frame lanterns to celebrate the conclusion of the new year. With support of The Playful Computation Group from the University of Colorado, we can connect this project to electronics and the Internet of Things by using micro:bits to wire and light our lanterns. At the same time, in Chinese class students will learn more about the traditions surrounding the lantern celebration. After the festival is over, students will continue using micro:bits for other projects involving electronics and coding during design lab class.
