I teach at a Mandarin immersion charter school. Each year our students celebrate the lunar new year with music and dance performances. As the science and design lab teacher, this year I want students to see how STEM connects to this cultural celebration. In China and Taiwan, the lunar new year is followed by a lantern festival. In design lab students will create wire-frame lanterns to celebrate the conclusion of the new year. With support of The Playful Computation Group from the University of Colorado, we can connect this project to electronics and the Internet of Things by using micro:bits to wire and light our lanterns. At the same time, in Chinese class students will learn more about the traditions surrounding the lantern celebration. After the festival is over, students will continue using micro:bits for other projects involving electronics and coding during design lab class.
