My Students

Making new friends as a teen often feels impossible until the day they spot a classmate playing their favorite phone game. Few words are needed to bond over this shared mutual interest. Now imagine their teacher channeling this into the classroom with game design team projects. Win!

My ELL (English Language Learner) students are energetic young pre-teens who come from a range of immigrant experiences and cultural backgrounds.

Each day they struggle to express themselves fully in a second language, and can get overwhelmed by this great challenge. Though they often show up unable to communicate effectively in the classroom, they do speak "teen". Even the quietest of ELLs is soon adding followers or joining online game rooms with their peers outside of school where the language gap isn't as wide as face-to-face. I believe channeling this social drive with engaging tech-based activities in class can open avenues to help boost my students' comfort and abilities in English.

My Project

With three HP Stream laptops, I will have the basic tools needed for students in each grade I teach to gain essential computer programming knowledge and skills that can supplement their digital native savvy. Several websites like Tynker, Gamestar Mechanic, and Code.org contain ready-to-go lessons and student-friendly activities to relay programming principles. I know my students already love gaming and browsing trendy sites, spending as much as their free time possible doing so. Re-purposing these activities for the classroom in the form of game and web design mini-lessons and projects, however, can lead them to thinking about project management, information flow, systems logic, and more. Now their love for the internet can be spent on collaborative, educational experiences with classmates that improve their digital skills for the future.

So often my students are overwhelmed playing catch-up with their peers because of their limited English proficiency, and lose out on some enrichment opportunities that others enjoy.

This project provides equal access for my ELLs to these fun opportunities, which encourages them on their difficult journey and simultaneously allows them to become more motivated in gaining the vocabulary needed to participate and more competent in technology usage.
