I work with students with varying degrees and types of speech and language deficits from preschool all the way up to 4th grade at two elementary schools in our district. Our students primarily come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and lack access to rich language environments and resources they need for language development.
My favorite part about working with my students is watching them experience new things through their eyes.
Despite their sometimes limiting environments, they are vibrant, resilient, and eager to learn. I love watching them learn about the world and seeing them be excited about learning in a way that is fun and meaningful for them.
As an educator, my goal for each of my students is to find a way to reach them in a way that is the most meaningful for them so they can have academic success and a love for learning. As a student, I always enjoyed school and got the most out of lessons that were fun, engaging, and taught me something through experiences and hands-on learning. I hope to reach my students in this same way so that they are able to hold on to the experiences we have together.
My Project
These books and materials will be used as companions to resources I have already created or purchased myself on Teachers Pay Teachers. I have a passion for teaching language skills through books and play. I have chosen seasonal books that I will use to teach vocabulary and concepts my students may not otherwise have access to in their everyday lives. These books have been specifically chosen to go with lessons that will help my students expand their language skills throughout the school year through vocabulary and play that they may not otherwise be exposed to in their environment.
Hands-on learning is so effective and backed by research, especially for students with speech and language deficits.
I enjoy making materials that go along with books to help facilitate carryover of skills and open the door for more learning and instill a love of reading in my students. While it is time-consuming, it saves a lot of money compared to therapy materials that are on the market and it allows me to tailor materials to meet my students' needs. Along with the books I chose, I have also included materials that will help me make my own materials to go along with seasonally appropriate lessons. I will use the velcro and binder rings to create adapted books for my students with complex communication needs that allow them to access books in a way that is more meaningful for them. The storage bins will make it easier to store my materials and carry them into classrooms as well as share with other educators.
