My students need high interest books at low levels in order to grow in language proficiency. While working with different levels of students, I want to provide them with a variety exciting books to read!
As an ESL teacher, I work with a wide variety of students from around the world. From students who were born in the United States and grew up speaking their native languages, to refugees from war-torn countries, I work with them all to develop English proficiency! I support many students in their regular education classes, such as English, Math, Social Studies, and Science class by co-teaching with multiple teachers. I also have small ESL groups, where I work with students on their academic and conversational English per their individual levels.
Diversity, culture, acceptance, and building meaningful academic experiences are what truly create a positive learning environment for my students.
In order to do this, I bring in students' backgrounds and their cultures to make learning relevant to them through hands-on experiences and with the use of technology. It is often quite a transition for students who have not been in school for years to join middle school, so we work on taking students from where they are at to where they need to be. My students are our future, it's my job to make it bright!
My Project
My students and I have made our tiny classroom into a positive learning environment where you can find vocabulary word-walls, visuals, and language learners! Although we have a lot to learn with, books would make a significant difference in our classroom. Specifically, leveled books for language learners, such as the titles included in my project.
Any donations to this project will inspire and enhance inclusive practices as well as active learning in the classroom.
The majority of the books include audio CD's so that language learners can listen to the books. Additionally, the books I have included have vocabulary as well as comprehension activities specifically created for language learners. As our world grows more diverse and literacy dependent, I plan to use more enriching books to get students motivated and ready to learn language and content. High interest books are key for language learners to get excited to read, which is why diverse books would have a positive impact in my classroom, and on my students' futures!
