Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Trenton, New Jersey is (and this is amazing!) a sanctuary city. Students from nations all over the world immigrate to Trenton with their families. The city, although economically poor in many areas, is rich in cultures and heritage from all corners of the world. We have a growing population of Hispanic immigrants, most speaking their native language Spanish.
My goal this Lunar New Year is to serve my Spanish-speaking students best by learning Spanish to both communicate with them and relate to them in a more interpersonal way.
I want to make their learning experience in my classroom as fun, inviting, and easy as possible. Being able to speak to them in their language to help them through difficult sections or simply just to show them that I am making an effort to learn their language will help create this environment.
If you help support this project you will support both my personal and professional development as I use these materials to access language learning programs in addition to supporting the well-being of my students. Representation for these students matters, especially for those who are just arriving in our country. We need to welcome them as teachers and embrace their language as they embrace ours.
