My students need sensory materials to improve their concentration and attention, ways to take sensory breaks when they are over-stimulated, and games that will provide implicit learning and opportunities for language learning.
My students are special because they need supports to understand language meaning (semantics), form (phonology, morphology, and syntax), and use (pragmatics). Many of my students are from lower socio-economic homes and lack exposure to books and experiences that set them up for success.
Language is the fundamental underpinning of all other content areas, and especially in reading, writing, and math.
My students need to improve their language skills to succeed in their classrooms. My room needs to build a variety of activities to improve language, as well as articulation skills, fluency, comprehension, and phonological awareness skills.
My Project
My students need to improve their concentration and attention to tasks to improve their speech and language skills. Balance ball chairs let their bodies be in motion so their brains can be engaged. Children's sensory systems are constantly developing, and giving students sensory input can improve their attention to tasks. The fidgets and ocean waves projector are calming activities that can be used when students come into therapy, or as a cool-down break after therapy. I would use an otoscope to go along with hearing screenings to determine if students have a cerumen impaction or middle ear fluid/infection. I could then make appropriate referrals from there.
My speech therapy room will give students a sensory break so that their minds can grow and they can be more relaxed.
Once their central nervous system needs are met, they can learn language improvement and articulation strategies to better access the educational curriculum.
My students also need to participate in turn-taking games that will allow for implicit learning with opportunities to engage in reciprocal conversation and improve speech and language development.
