Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We love doing projects in speech therapy! It gives us the chance to apply our communication skills and work together. The iPad we received through a grant helps us integrate our learning with technology, but we need accessories to increase its potential as an educational tool.
My students have communication disorders that impact their education.
They attend school in an urban Michigan school district. Many live in poverty and many come from homes where they are not exposed to language-rich interactions with adults. Many are also English Language Learners. These children need speech therapy that engages them and enriches their language skills so they can be successful in school and gain the skills they will need for adulthood. Using technology to create projects allows my students to develop higher order thinking skills and provides opportunities for exposure to new vocabulary. These projects make learning fun and allow us to use our language skills in a realistic situation, which is so important for inspiring the students to learn.
My Project
My students and I love doing projects with our iPad using many of the free apps we've found and our own imaginations. We make movies that illustrate concepts and expand our storytelling abilities. Right now our iPad is without a cover though, so we're at risk of damaging it. A cover would give us some peace of mind when we use it. We would also love a keyboard to help us add text to our projects and improve our writing skills. Finally, we would like a cable to connect our iPad to the projector so we can display our projects. These accessories will open up new possibilities for us to use and improve our language skills through project-based learning.

These iPad accessories will enhance our experience with the iPad by keeping it safe and expanding our possibilities for creating and displaying the projects we create using our ever improving communication skills.
