My Students

Our class is composed of 20 playful, curious, beautifully sarcastic fifth graders in New Bedford, MA, who have a love of science, good books, and visiting their kindergarten buddies. One of my biggest goals is to find ways to get them to love learning and care about what they learn. This takes many forms, from building our own mechanical arms to finding class books that make them beg for just one more page before dismissal. Working toward an engaged, excited attitude in each student is my huge focus to help them be their best selves.

My Project

"Go get comfy!" is a favorite phrase for my fifth graders. This is their signal to gather around the rug, find a good spot, and settle in for novel study. I started this last year and found that the joy and calm demeanor was a welcome change to our end-of-day routine. But peace and quiet isn't the real purpose of novel study. The real purpose is to make them love reading.

Fifth grade is a critical year for readers--if we lose them now, we lose them for life.

The most important thing I feel that I can do as a teacher of language arts is give the students opportunities to read stories that they will love. If they find stories to love, they'll keep reading. If they keep reading, they will have better achievement in school overall--this is common knowledge. We need to make it common priority.

I make time for a class novel study at the end of every school day, but it is hard to get a whole class set of a novel. This is where we need help.
