"I hate reading." This is what many of my students came into fifth grade proclaiming, full of near-preteen attitude. We've already come so far from this point to a place where, now, they actually get excited about parts of the school day. Good stories are slowly winning over even my most stubborn children. If we want students to really shine in the language arts, they have to love to read. After introducing titles such as "The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell" by Chris Colfer, I've finally got them hooked. They are, after all, still kids, and kids love mystery and suspense and a little bit of magic. I know that I need to keep the ball rolling if I want them to dive deeper into a love of reading. I don't own any class sets--all that I've used is borrowed or school-owned--but I want to have a class set of the amazing novel "The Girl Who Drank the Moon" by Kelly Barnhill so that I can share it with these students and every class in the years to come.
