Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach fourth grade, and I am completing my first year of teaching this grade. This year I decided to add a bin of the children's books to our library so that the children can read each other's work. This was the most popular bin in the class. The children loved reading one anothers' work and having book discussions about them. They were able to see a tangible work that they felt pride in. After all, it was their effort, hard work and dedication that was inside those bins. During one of these book talks, I overheard the children comparing the writing craft of their favorite authors to their classmates. It was then I realized how important these books are. The children were not only taking pride in their work, but taking pride in their classmates' work and applying all their strategies regarding good book talk. The only problem was that the writing in the books began to smear and the edges of the paper began to tear with each reading. Some books had to be removed from the library until I could get hold of a laminating machine to protect the pages. Unfortunately, it's not easy to get a hold of these machines. A machine as useful as this is also very costly. For this reason, I am asking for a laminating machine for our class. I would like to laminate the students published work so that we can share them with one another all year long. We always tell the students that they are writing for an audience. This makes it real. They can share it with the people in their world.
