My Project

My students are energetic, curious, and full of personality! As an elementary physical education teacher, I have the privilege of teaching students with a wide range of strengths, abilities, and learning needs. I co-teach physical education at a Title I elementary school, where movement is an important part of students' day. The students love opportunities to run, jump, balance, climb, create, explore, and challenge themselves. For many of them, movement is also an important tool that helps their bodies feel calm, organized, and ready to learn. I am especially excited to expand the ways we support our students in grades 1–5 and students in our self-contained autism classroom.

Some students thrive in a traditional PE environment, while others are most successful when they have opportunities for smaller, more structured movement experiences.

My goal is to meet students where they are and give every child opportunities to experience success through movement.

Now imagine having a special place at school where you can crawl through a tunnel, push against resistance, balance across stepping stones, roll on a therapy ball, ride a scooter board, squeeze into a body sock, crash safely into a soft pad, and then take a few moments to breathe and reset.

With this project, I am requesting sensory and gross-motor equipment that will allow me to create an intentional movement space for all students.

Students will use balance stones, sensory floor tiles, scooter boards, resistance bands, therapy balls, a crawl tunnel, body socks, wobble equipment, a crash pad, rocking seats, tactile materials, and calming tools to participate in short sensory-motor circuits.

For my students this Sensory & Movement Zone will provide opportunities to participate in physical activity in a smaller, more structured environment that can be adapted to individual needs.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
