Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a school with an incredibly diverse population. We are over 50% Hispanic, with a large population that identifies as Asian, Turkish, Pakistani, Syrian, Persian, Polish, Egyptian, or another minority ethnicity. We also have over 20 varsity sports at our school, including track and field, tennis, basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, baseball, softball, hockey, cheerleading, swimming, football, cross country, and bowling.
I am a Biology teacher with over 15 years of experience; I have taught all levels of biology and I currently teach AP Biology.
These students are highly motivated to succeed, many of whom may be the first generation to attend college. Although we have over 50% of our population who qualify for the free or reduced-lunch program, as a faculty we strive to make sure our students, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, gender identity, or citizenship are given the tools to succeed.
We have an award-winning school for visual and performing arts [SVPA] here at our school. We train our students in public speaking, dance, acting, singing, and other musical instruments. We build our own sets for our plays and work with professionals in the industry.
My Project
There are a lot of highly motivated young ladies who take the AP Biology exam. Statistically, more than 50% of the students identify as female who take AP Bio. And many amazing women, some of whom are featured in the If/Then Collection, were Biology majors in college, such as Jess Cramp - a shark researcher, Danielle Twum - a field applications scientist, and Earyn McGee - an environmental biology scholar.
By taking AP Biology in high school, our young ladies will earn college credit for their first year Biology course.
The exam is graded on a scale of 1 to 5 and most colleges accept a score of 3 or better. This project is for practice test books for each of our young scholars taking AP Biology this year, whether virtually or in-person.
Because of the Coronavirus, our students are being given the choice of learning face-to-face or virtually. Parents are choosing one track or the other for the school year. This adds additional complexity to this already difficult course, but with your help, the students will be more successful using these AP Biology prep books.
