Labels Help Us Learn English

My students need classroom sets of crayons and printer ink to create labels for the classroom to internalize important vocabulary and familiarize themselves with their surroundings.

My Students

All of my students are entering level English language learners. For the majority this is their first year in the United States and in school in general. This year my students come from Iraq, Sudan, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Nepal, Congo and Malaysia. Some were born and lived all their lives in refugee camps, some had education interrupted by wars and conflicts. Several of my students are going through a silent period when they are still not able to produce any English words.

My Project

Do you remember starting first grade? Nervous, excited.... How about starting first grade in a new country where nobody speaks your language? That is the experience my newcomer students and their families go through every September. I hope this project will support my students and their families in getting acclimated to their new academic environment.

I hope with your help my students will create labels for every item in my classroom and around our school and every thematic unit that we will work on during the year.

Printing pictures, using markers to write the labels and color them to make more attractive and memorable is vital for making visuals, labels and signs. Student participation in making the visuals will help them memorize vocabulary faster.
