This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My specific set of students all come from a hispanic background, and most come from low-income families. They are a low-income neighborhoods, and get to school on public transportation (if accessible), walking, or are in the neighborhood. They like to read and have discussions in class. They're silly and really love to be the center of attention regardless of who's around. They are very caring and very protective of me.
They truly like to take care of each other and make sure that each one is caught up and doing what they should be.
They also like to be competitive with each other in a way that encourages them and I really love that about them.
My Project
My students struggle with grasping basic reading skills, and reading levels. I would like to build them a library where one, I can make them accountable for their own reading success, and two I can help them enjoy reading without it feeling boring. Their library has no books in world languages, only English.
The majority of my students come from minority families, and don't have access to greater resources.
I would like to create a mini-library where the students can 'check-out' the books, and once they're done reading the book, I can check for comprehension. In turn they enjoy having resources, and I can assess and grow their reading levels.
