My Students

I am redesigning my classroom to make it a shared, student-centered space that targets all types of learners. Some kids just need to wobble!

Our school district is moving together towards teaching through personalized learning, which gives our learners voice and choice and the power to follow passions and make decisions about their own learning.

These kids are excited, motivated, and ready for the opportunity to make decisions. Roughly one third of our school's population are native Spanish speakers, which adds to a rich school culture of family traditions and approaches to learning.

My Project

A major component of this personalized learning model is setting up a classroom environment that attends to many different learning styles. The room and all spaces are shared by every learners with areas identified for the different kinds of learning children may need to access throughout the day. Some area designs may include group work, presentations or demonstrations (by teachers or learners), research, reading, thinking and discussing, and creating and innovating. Wobble chairs are designed to support students with ADHD, because they provide a physical challenge and opportunity to release energy while simultaneously working. However, modifications such as these wobble chairs often benefit all learners, especially with a shared classroom space.

What a wonderful way to empower learners by allowing them to design and choose their ideal learning environment?
