My Students

My school is located in a mixed socioeconomic area of Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. My students come from diverse home environments--ranging from generational poverty to college graduates. Multi-generational Hawaiian, Filipino, and Caucasian families fill our classrooms as well as recent immigrants from China, Korea, South America, and Micronesia. Our school community embraces our diversity and provides a safe place where all learners strive for academic excellence and kindness towards others.

As we work towards safely reopening schools after a year of pandemic learning, I strive to help our multilingual learners access resources and understand critical information to keep our learning community safe and all aspects of our students' needs met.

One of my goals as a teacher is to empower my students with a voice in their community. I want to give purpose to their learning goals that go beyond the four walls of our classroom. As the English Learner Coordinator and Teacher for over 200 amazing multilingual learners at my school, I am constantly seeking opportunities to close the achievement gap for this subgroup of scholars and provide necessary learning tools to increase student success!

My Project

Kokua is a Hawaiian word that means help, but on a deeper level of translation it is the selfless act of helping others with no personal gain involved. Throughout the pandemic I distributed Kokua Bags filled with books, food, and face masks for my students who were stuck at home. Now, I would like to continue these Kokua Bags for any child who needs a little help accessing essential self-care items so they can better focus in school.

Help me fight hunger and provide essential self-care items to students in need.

Items included in this project will be discretely provided to children who need clothing, food, and hygiene help so that they can better focus on learning while at school.
