Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember being 9 years old? I hope you do not recall stress, anxiety, nervous meltdowns or fear. This year I moved from kindergarten to teaching 3rd grade. The overwhelming pattern I notice is the level of anxiety and fear many of my student have when approaching something new or challenging.
My students are creative problem solvers, they brighten my day with their stories and jokes, yet they are thirsting for skills and tools to reduce their anxiety, stress and fear.
I want them to see themselves as the successful problem solvers and creative, ingenious thinkers they are.
The solution for many could be teaching resilience or "grit" but we don't get there overnight. My students need your help to develop this skill and frame of mind. They have asked for a knitting club and demonstrated finger knitting and teaching others. I want to honor them and their idea.
My Project
The purchase of knitting needles, yarn and reusable basic looms to weave will provide many options for this club. Volunteers will come in and teach the basics to our creativity team who will then teach any other students who want to join. A weekly project will be posted and any students (and parents) wanting to join are welcome.
Creativity through knitting helps students connect and become self-regulated learners.
Students will learn techniques to self-regulate through creativity and working with their hands. Together we will create an inspiring, calm and self-regulated learning space where all students can thrive as students, community members and learners.
Ultimately, students will be able to keep their knitting at their cubbies and go to it when a break is needed or during the class time that is conducive to knitting and thinking.
