Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am honored and excited to be establishing a continuum room for special education students in grades K-5 at James Monroe Elementary. Our school community is diverse with many cultural differences. We are a Title 1 school, with close to 90% of our students receiving free and reduced meals.
My students are those that demonstrate behaviorial regulation needs, sensory and or physical disabilities.
They are learning behavior replacement skills and taking appropriate risks in sharing their feelings and working through barriers. They are curious and desire to connect to their world. They however lack the needed skills in order to navigate social cues that they do not yet recognize. They experience anger, embarrassment and feelings of loneliness. This is an opportunity to provide direct instruction of skills needed in using appropriate behaviors to build confidence in who they are and what wonderful things they bring to the world they live in. It's an amazing time for our students!
My Project
As we continue to grow and build our room for students with significant physical and behavioral needs, we have identified that we have a real need for basic furniture, specifically small group tables to provide appropriate seating for our students that need staff to sit with them to provide 1:1 and hand over hand interventions.
We need safe tables to provide movement accommodations per their specific needs to help them access skills that are not only academic, but for the development of their oral language and fine and gross motor skills.
Small group tables will not only allow our special needs students to work with staff in hand over hand instruction, but also allow them to learn how to work together as a team during small group instruction.
The tables will provide a place for the communication log for our non verbal student, a place for small and gross motor skill activities as well as academic reading, writing and math and one day science experiments! Our dream for a room that provides all needed supports to access the school setting and expectations continues with this next step. Unite with your fellow Knights and sit at our round table with us.
