Knights Building Their Future

My students need a standing desk, STEM activities and things to build.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a special education teacher in a small community in the Central San Joaquin Valley. Our poverty rate is very high. As a result of this, all of our students receive free breakfasts and lunches. Many of our students are second language learners. We work diligently to provide as many experiences and tools as possible to facilitate growth which allows them to meet their grade level standard.

Students with special needs benefit greatly from STEM activities that include hands-on learning.

Several strategies that have helped my students is providing them with special seating and various manipulatives and tools that help them to focus on their learning.

Having my students with special needs doing projects with their grade level peers is important. I have found that some of my students with language deficits are actually better than their mainstream peers when it comes to STEM activities like robotics using Lego's to create their own projects.

My Project

I have found that giving my students the opportunity to move around helps them with their learning. Some experts believe that a standing desk may also help students with ADHD learn in the classroom. Stacy Gray, a certified calming practitioner, says “children who need to move to learn should not be looked down upon and made to feel that they are always frustrating and disappointing the adults in their lives.” She says this can damage their self-esteem. So, by being proactive and allowing them to stand and move while doing work, she feels the students will be happier, more focused and learn better. To further this goal, I am requesting funding for a standing desk, in addition to LEGOS, Lincoln Logs and Tinker Toys.

Using the LEGOS gives students a sense of accomplishment.

They are able to problem solve, follow directions, and even start to make their own creations. Something very interesting happened when I received a student desk recently. I was having trouble putting it together, so I asked several of my students to help out. I was able to share building tips that I had been given from my family, as well as listen to, and put in practice ideas they had to complete the project. It was such an eye-opener.

We then talked about the assembly instructions and how they could be made easier. We talked about future careers in engineering where they could change/modify or even develop their own desks. This gave all of us a sense of empowerment instead of the frustration of assembling something that was difficult-problem solving at it's best.

I believe that the LEGOS and even the assembly of the desk will give my students a vision for a bright future that they may not have even considered before.
