Kitchen Chemistry - Chemistry for Everyone

My students need chemicals and chemistry kits to conduct meaningful experiments for their chemistry class.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Wallace's classroom raised $468

This project is fully funded

My Students

Ever had a science class without any hands on experiences. My students have. They enjoy experiencing the discovery that comes with hands on lab work. With some simple "kitchen" chemistry they have been able to gain some understanding of how chemistry works. Yet, they want some "real" chemistry.

My students are those that for various reasons cannot attend the local middle or high school.

We are in fact an alternative school. The students often feel like they don't get the same learning opportunities that "normal" students receive. Their family background may not be one of any interest in education or in some cases they have never enjoyed any success in school and have fallen behind in reading and math skills. Some have issues with the police or other social issues. Regardless, they are good kids who need to challenged and given opportunities to grow. I have students who are parents, been to jail, live with someone other than a parent, and in some cases move from home to home. Our school is small, only 17 students. Although I lack books, supplies, and equipment, we have a website on kitchen chemistry that has been developed by the students. The majority of my students are black and all are considered poor.

My Project

The chemicals and chemistry kits will allow my students to conduct meaningful experiments that will allow them to see, touch, and smell what they read and hear about science. Two of students are very interested in science and they will benefit greatly from these resources. They will be able to utilize the lab experience to expand their basic understanding of chemistry and continue to strengthen their interest in pursuing science after high school. The other students will be able to "do" chemistry and thus not be bored with learning about science. Students will learn about elements, compounds, and chemical reactions. These resources will allow me to go beyond the simple and let all my students experience the complex. It will lead to higher order thinking skill development.

Chemistry occurs everyday.

It can be found under sink, when cooking the meals, or in the garage. Schools like ours often have little or no lab equipment or materials. By funding this project, students will be able to gain a better understanding of chemistry and how it works. For some students these resources will be the spark that ignites an interest in pursuing science and may make school a fun place to be.
