My students are those that for various reasons cannot attend the local middle or high school. We are in fact an alternative school. The students often feel like they don't get the same learning opportunities that "normal" students receive. Their family background may not be one of any interest in education or in some cases they have never enjoyed any success in school and have fallen behind in reading and math skills. Some have issues with the police or other social issues. Regardless, they are good kids who need to challenged and given opportunities to grow. I have students who are parents, been to jail, live with someone other than a parent, and in some cases move from home to home. Our school is small, only 17 students. Although I lack books, supplies, and equipment, we have a website on kitchen chemistry that has been developed by the students. The majority of my students are black and all are considered poor.
