I teach a group of 15 Latino and African American students with a wide range of different learning disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. My high school special education classroom needs cooking supplies! Shopping for and preparing simple meals is part of our weekly curriculum. Currently, we can heat meals in a microwave. With a crock Pot , rice cooker and blender we will have more options to prepare simple and healthy meals.
Who are they?
The typical student in my class reads at a Kindergarten to forth grade level and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population who receive 100% free lunch. Tablets can help my students with fine motor difficulties.
My students need a rice cooker, crock pot, and blender . This will enable them learn how to make simple meals for themselves as part of our life skills curriculum. They love learning new things and being exposed to different types of food from our functional skills curriculum.
We have been doing very simple meals that may only require a microwave and now we are ready to introduce the rice cooker and crock pot.
I am requesting rice cooker and a crock pot to use in simple meal preparation as part of my life skills curriculum. Each week, we will shop for a meal at a grocery store, We will walk to get there, therefore we will be supporting our neighborhood stores.
We will then come back and in teams with full adult support, prepare the food and eat as a group together. I teach them how to shop, pay for items and how to prepare simple food such as spaghetti, chili, baked potatoes, stews, grilled cheese, etc.
Imagine how wonderful it will be for my students to give back what they have learned and perhaps prepare a meal for their family using a crock pot or a rice cooker!
Many families don't give my students the chance to prepare food because of the perceived danger in using knives and hot surfaces. At the end of the year, I send home a collection of recipes and photos that have become a gift many parents will cherish
