This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Hi Donors! I have the honor of working with some incredible students at KIPP Columbus Elementary. My students are the most impassioned, honest and have the deepest of feelings for themselves and others. These students are students who often struggle to navigate their classrooms, peers and or teachers.
We come together to reflect, restore and rebuild in a space call the "Peace Room." In this space, KIPPsters are able to take the time they need to work through what is keeping them from feeling joy, loved, or capable.
We host restorative conversations when there is conflict, whether between students or even students and teachers! The space is meant for students to remember how wonderful they are, and discover what they need to continue to thrive.
At times, the space can see turmoil, and that is okay but I would love for there to be ample supplies for our KIPPsters. Knowing that their "normal," our "normal," will be in flux for some time to come, the Peace Room should be their constant.
My Project
We are now moving into our second year of Restorative Practice. In our first year, we focused on building systems for students to reflect after they had reached a space where they could not process their feelings on their own. This year, we want to transition the space to be a proactive approach for students to navigate their processing needs. When students are able to think, to breath and not feel they are in conflict, they are able to learn, grow and thrive. We have designated spaces to hole restorative circles, space where students can read about balance, write/sketch what they are experiencing, and at times, just be with themselves. We need more purposeful supplies to support their social emotional needs. The materials I have requested will help establish these spaces and provide them with tools to support their journey distance learning!
