My Project

I am requesting a curated collection of sensory items that will serve as self-regulation tools to enhance focus and persistence across all STEM activities:

Needoh Stress Balls, Putty, and Slime (Inhibitory Control & Working Memory):

STEM Function: These quiet, tactile tools provide concentrated sensory input, which helps stabilize the nervous system and frees up the Working Memory needed to manipulate variables, memorize steps, and manage multi-part instructions. Fidgeting with these items helps students exercise Inhibitory Control—resisting the impulse to leave their seat or tap the desk—thereby sustaining attention during lengthy experiments or coding sessions.

Outcome: Students become better able to maintain the mental focus required for scientific observation and mathematical precision.

Stickers (Motivation & Reinforcement):

STEM Function: Stickers will be used as positive reinforcement for process praise and metacognition. They will be awarded for demonstrating effort, practicing a calming technique, or successfully revising an engineering design after a failure.

Outcome: We reinforce the value of persistence and effort over instant correctness, directly supporting the growth mindset critical for handling the inevitable setbacks in STEM challenges.

These simple, low-cost sensory tools will empower students to take ownership of their attention, fostering the self-management and resilience that distinguishes a passive learner from a successful, persistent problem-solver.
