Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a classroom full of amazing and curious 2nd graders in the heart of Silicon Valley! Our school is a Title I school, with 80% of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. My students come from various backgrounds, many from Hispanic and Vietnamese backgrounds, with very diverse needs. The majority of my students are English language learners, where English is their second language. My students come to school with a great attitude to learn and they all deserve nothing but the best!
My Project
My students have been back in the classroom for three months now! We have been hitting the books hard to fill in the gaps in their learning after spending more than a year away from the classroom. However, we have also taken the time to incorporate social-emotional learning. My students are relearning how to interact with each other and rebuilding healthy, social relationships with one another.
Kindness, empathy, and being inclusive are such important traits to have as human beings living on this planet together!
These books are just one way to raise awareness of diversity and inclusion for my students. Yes, teaching academics is absolutely important. However, I would also like to teach my students about kindness, empathy, and inclusion. As our principal always says, "When in doubt, choose kind!"
