Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have never learned that reading can be fun. Many think that books are boring. This population also enjoys technology, so using a Kindle to read would be attractive to them.

My students come from diverse ethnic backgrounds but share a commonality of low SES students – the absence of an adequate vocabulary caused by the limited access to high interest books and lack of an intrinsic passion to read.

The majorities of my students seldom visit the local public library and read independently. Many have never finished a complete novel apart from assigned school reading material. Sadly, by second grade, studies show children with my students’ demographics have a 2000 word vocabulary gap that negatively impacts their reading comprehension. This significant gap persists through their educational careers unless vocabulary acquisition is accelerated. Amazingly, my colleagues and I can make a difference and help reverse this trend through modeling and encouraging extensive independent reading to expand word knowledge. The bottom line – my most reluctant readers must be motivated to develop the drive and love to read anything and everything!

My Project

Just imagine, with 30 minutes to spare before the start of school, Francisco decided to dive into his current novel to finish a few chapters. He neared the end of the book and longed to know how the story ended. Francisco loved reading books on his Kindle. Before joining the Kindle reading club, Francisco rarely read books and his reading skills suffered from the lack of daily reading. He actually liked to read but never had the opportunity to get many books. His Mom’s work schedule did’t allow for frequent visits to the library and the middle school library offered only a few titles. Francisco hoped to finish this book by the end of the week in anticipation of getting another book synced to his Kindle. Francisco also received reading incentive credit that would allow him to buy a few music titles for his music library. To prove he actually read to earn her reward, his teacher advisory regularly checked his book for digital highlights and received Kindle emails.

Please support the 'Kindle the pleasure of reading program'.

Your donation will help inspire reluctant readers to become motivated, passionate readers. Kindles in the hand of students will help provide high interest reading material difficult to obtain for low SES students. Moreover, eReaders, such as the Kindle, help motivate students in the "digital generation" to read. Widespread independent reading fosters vocabulary growth better than any other activity (in or out of the classroom).
