My Students

The single most important thing to help students become better readers is for them to read! My goal is for my students to read as much as they can, which means engaging in high quality literature. E-readers can provide access to well written appropriately leveled books in multiple copies.

Students in my school come from a wide range of economic levels, and we have a 35% poverty rate.

My class is a diverse group in terms of learning styles and cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Their reading levels range from second grade to high school. Some of my students do not have access to books or library cards, and so I work hard to get books into their hands. Many of my students have developed a love of reading and sharing books with each other. We have many single copies of books available in the classroom that are either bought used or are funded through parent book orders. When my team teacher and I want to do book groups, we often form small groups and try to tie the books to student interests or instructional content. For example, each year we create a living history museum. Prior to writing their scripts, students read a variety of historical fiction and non-fiction books to learn about a specific time period or event.

My Project

My students enjoy using recent technology, and the use of e-readers is definitely a draw for those who are reluctant readers. They allow us to have some lower level books available for our very struggling readers that lets them look like others, without them being embarrassed by having a "little kid book." In addition, they provide almost immediate access to books that students request to read in small groups, without have to wait days or weeks for the public library to gather enough copies for us. It allows us to build on the momentum that students generate when they read an excellent book and share it with others. Having e-readers in our classroom also provides access to more recent books that are too expensive for us to purchase in hardcover in multiple copies, since the e-books are cheaper.

If we can hook students in the elementary years into reading for enjoyment, then they will be more likely to practice reading and they will become better readers.

Providing books to students that meet their individual levels, while also providing opportunities for them to read books in small groups and share their excitement, guarantees that students will become stronger readers and more willing readers. The e-readers let us do this!
