"Are you ready, Team Incredible?" This is the phrase you hear every morning in my classroom. My second graders are truly amazing and ready to be inspired to fall in love with reading. My biggest challenge is to get books into their hands and provide them with positive reading models every day.
My second graders are from a variety of backgrounds.
Many of them come from homes that speak very little English. In addition, my students are at the cusp of transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Also, these students are part of a generation who are training for jobs that do not even exist. They are engaged by computers and technology. Our school has many students who rely on school for breakfast and lunch. There is not much leftover in family funds for books, never mind technology. Many of my students borrow books from my classroom library to read at night. They are eager to read, but need a variety of materials to excite them. My ELL students need daily oral reading models that the Kindle Fire can provide for them.
My Project
With the purchase of two Kindle devices, it is my hope that my students will use them to listen to audio books daily in my classroom. In addition, they will have access to a variety of titles to read on their own in a way that hooks them into reading. WiFi is available in my school, so they will also be able to utilize the Kindle devices to practice reading and math skills using a variety of apps that are available. They will learn to be fluent, engaged readers who know how to pull information from their reading. My ELL students will build their vocabulary and speaking skills through listening to engaging text.
Donations to my project will allow my students access to a variety of ways to read and gain information from text.
It will also allow my students, at all reading levels, to read books that are interesting to them, regardless of their ability to read the text. This Kindle Fire project will create highly motivated readers. My students will become lifelong readers.
