My second graders are from a variety of backgrounds. Many of them come from homes that speak very little English. In addition, my students are at the cusp of transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Also, these students are part of a generation who are training for jobs that do not even exist. They are engaged by computers and technology. Our school has many students who rely on school for breakfast and lunch. There is not much leftover in family funds for books, never mind technology. Many of my students borrow books from my classroom library to read at night. They are eager to read, but need a variety of materials to excite them. My ELL students need daily oral reading models that the Kindle Fire can provide for them.
