Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Title I, K-5 magnet school that educates almost 700 students each year. The students at my school come from a wide range of family dynamics. Some live in traditional households, while others live with single parents or extended family. My students' economic situations are just as varied as their family dynamics and more than sixty percent of our school qualifies for free lunch.
A large percentage of our school population consists of English language learners.
Seventy-five percent of my class speaks more than one language and often English is not spoken when they are at home. Regardless of these factors, every one of my students always possesses a passion for learning, exploring, and creating.
My Project
The book bins we currently use in our classroom are 10 years old! I'm thrilled that they lasted so long, but these old bins are cracking, stretched, and sticky. These new book bins will help keep my students organized as they store their book choices and phonics books in them. These book bins also serve as a place to store reading aids they have used in small group so that they can continue to practice during independent reading time.
Empowering students to choose their own books and providing a safe place to keep their reading material will help them to develop a love of reading!
The stacking book baskets will be used to hold larger book collections in our classroom library, provide a place to return books when choosing new reading material, and provide a place for books that may be ripped and need some extra care.
These bins and baskets are durable and are proven to last for years so future classes will benefit from this project as well. Thank you so much for supporting our classroom!
