Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Title I, K-5 magnet school that educates almost 700 students each year. The students at my school come from a wide range of family dynamics. Some live in traditional households, while others live with single parents or extended family. My students' economic situations are just as varied as their family dynamics and more than sixty percent of our school qualifies for free lunch.
A large percentage of our school population consists of English language learners.
Seventy-five percent of my class speaks more than one language and often English is not spoken when they are at home. Regardless of these factors, every one of my students always possesses a passion for learning, exploring, and creating.
My Project
I love working with Kindergarten students because you can see an amazing amount of growth in every student each year. Not all Kindergarten students come in with the same alphabet and sound knowledge. Some students have gone to preschool, some have not, some have had a lot of enriching experiences while others haven't.
Students not only start at different levels, but they also progress at different rates and have some very different needs.
Some children simply need additional time, but others need very specific tools to help them learn and master different concepts.
Not all children are able to learn simply by looking at and listening to the teacher. Kid Lip Picture Cards show children's mouths forming letters. Students will be able to see exactly where their tongue, teeth, and lips should be when forming sounds. The small compact mirrors will allow students to see what their mouths are doing as they produce letter sounds.
The Match-A-Sound! Phonemic Awareness Boxes will provide extra practice that students can use independently during small group instruction. Students will be able to practice beginning sounds, ending sound, or rhyming sounds by matching objects that have the same sound as the one pictured on the mat.
