Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Dr. Seuss said, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Students need a good reading foundation that will benefit them throughout their schooling.

I am the team leader and am writing on behalf of my entire kindergarten team.

We have 6 kindergarten teachers and have 110 students that attend our elementary school. We have students with all different learning styles and academic needs. Each class has students that are above grade level, on grade level, and below grade level, an average of 4-5 students per class that speak a second language other than English, gifted students, and students with learning disabilities. Our school also has three autistic classes and often we help to mainstream these students. We do everything we can to help cater to all our students' needs and find strategies and resources to benefit their learning even if it means using our own finances.

My Project

The leveled reading books will be divided among our kindergarten classes. Our team created reading logs in which the students choose a book based on their reading level to take home and practice on a daily basis. Students get the opportunity to have a book specific to their current reading level. The book assigned to the student will challenge them with new words and prevent them from feeling frustrated or bored. It will also allow parents to spend time with their child and feel a part of their education. Once a student can read the book independently, retell the story, and answer comprehension questions he/she may choose another book. These books will also be available to read in the classroom so students can read to their 4th grade reading buddies or each other. Incentives are given to those who read a certain amount of minutes per month. The biggest joy is the excitement a student displays when he/she can read and comprehend a book all on his or her own.

Our team firmly believes in instilling a love for learning in our students' lives.

One way to do that is through reading. Kindergarten is the foundation by which the rest of a child's education is built upon. We hope that you will help build that much needed foundation.
