Help me give my students Flexible Comfy Floor Seats so they can choose where they work best in the classroom setting! Choice is a powerful engagement tool for Kindergarteners.
My Kindergarteners are naturally curious explorers, and they are just discovering the habits of being a scholar in the 21st century. It requires many skills, but chief among them is the ability to self-regulate. Hence, my students have many opportunities to choose their hands-on exploration to further their learning throughout the day. However, they are unduly limited in their seating options.
Flexible seating isn't just an educational fad; rather, it's a powerful option for my students to exercise self-management skills in determining a setting in which they work best.
Some students prefer to sit alone in a quiet corner of the classroom to be reflective or to take a much needed break from the social demands of the classroom while others like to sit in study groups for the intangible quality of community that exists among classmates. For this reason, I would love to be able to offer flexible seating options that would allow my Kindergarten students to claim a piece of their classroom environment to make it their own. With your help, some of my students who would have found the school day unnecessarily restrictive would instead find an engaging, inviting classroom for their most imaginative and productive learning!
My Project
This project of flexible seating options would allow students to create small collaborative groups to conduct discussions about an inquiry based project in math, science, or the language arts. It can also be used to allow students a quiet work space for independent, deep-thinking about new concepts they are learning. Also, Kindergarteners are developing their social skills and the option to sit with many different classmates contributes to their social-emotional development.
Kindergartners know themselves well and choosing a spot in the classroom where they can be most productive would be welcomed and celebrated by my students.
Most of all, flexible seating increases student engagement and interest in learning! It is powerful.
