This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Writing, as well as reading, is a vital skill for everyone. My kindergarten students are at an age where they can be taught to love writing and learn to write independently. Journal writing across the curriculum is a great way to accomplish this goal.

My students are five- and six-year-old students who attend an inner city school in a high poverty area.

Most are on free breakfast and lunch. My students are eager and excited about learning and school, even though many do not have the required school supplies. Our school is small and on a very limited budget, but our community, though poor, has a heart of gold!

My Project

My five-year-old students love to color. In order for them to get excited about journal writing, I have requested three types of journals with pages that have age appropriate lines to help in letter formation as well as a place to illustrate their writing. I also ordered a set of journals that is an ongoing, personal student dictionary which will stay with each student so that they may look up words independently when writing. I also want to provide them with plenty of jumbo pencils to aide in developing their motor skills. I believe my students will be enthusiastic to engage in our journal writing activities! Finally, the two journal storage centers will bring organization to the classroom by storing journals according to the class they will use them in.

Learning to write and writing for enjoyment is crucial to any learner.
