Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever walked into a situation where you felt overwhelming odds stacked against you? Well, have you? You have! Well, guess what? When it comes to my classroom, my students have not! I try to make my students feel like they can achieve anything with the right tools. We are a high poverty, low socioeconomic school where 90% receive free or reduced lunch. We are also the magnet school for our GATE and Bilingual programs for our district. Most of our students are English language learners, whose parents speak very little English themselves. But through reading, writing and collaborative projects I guide them to soar, believe, and dream!
My Project
In the classroom as in life children need to learn to work together. In class my students work on math and science projects in collaborative groups and they do an awesome job! But we were having a little problem working together at recess. We need something to bring it together and these soccer materials will do the trick.
As a class project we worked on making teams, assigning positions and working on strategies and it was great until we got out to the playground.
Kids going back and forth and trying to get the ball between two chairs was good but goal nets, balls, and shirts would make it awesome! My kids make do with what we have but they deserve more. Ever since I told them we were going to try and get these items through DonorsChoose they have not stopped talking about it.
Every day I see them bringing in more kids to the idea of having this sort of rotating group of teams and even a cheer squad. They've even brought this into their writing and I can't even tell you how many journal entries are about soccer: where they will play, how they'll play, with who, and when. Working together, planning, strategizing and bringing a goal ( pun intended) to life!
