My students are a diverse group attending a K-5 elementary school. They are a group full of energy and wonder. For some, this year will be their first school experience and for all, this is their first year together in an elementary school setting. They are kinesthetic learners who learn best through movement and play. In order to be successful and engaged, movement must be incorporated into every lesson. They are kind, funny and smart. They crave ritual and routine that must be taught with intention and specificity in order for to achieve mastery. Social emotional learning is an essential piece of their core curricular program and is emphasized in their school community.
When children have time to move, they are more available for learning. These yoga mats and blocks, specifically designed for young children, will allow for daily yoga and mindfulness practice for 20 kindergarten students. They will also serve as a flexible seating option for students during whole group meetings, literacy and math centers.
Students come into kindergarten ready to learn, move and play but often struggle with self regulation.
Carving out time for activities such as yoga, mindful movement, guided dance, morning meeting and purposeful play are essential in order to meet the needs of the whole child.
The teacher, an avid yogi and fitness instructor, will use these materials to guide students in mindful movement activities. Through daily yoga practice, a culture of kindness and caring will grow. Students will enhance social emotional skills related to self-regulation, self-awareness and responsible decision making. Students will also be more available to learn critical academic skills.
