I teach in a high poverty elementary school that serves students in grades Pre-K through 5th grade. Many of the students suffer from toxic stress trauma, in which they have been exposed to violence, neglect, financial hardships, mental illness and/or substance abuse. Students and their families are frequently moving in, out, and back in again. The students are provided free breakfast, lunch, and snack daily. Families have access to a school-based health care program which provides medical, dental and mental health care.
Although my kindergarten students have difficult home lives, they come to school daily excited and eager to learn.
They are excited to learn not only academic skills but also social skills. They enjoy hands-on activities the most, especially activities that feel like play.
My Project
My kindergarten students are learning about science, technology, engineering and mathematics for the very first time. This STEM project will provide my students with a hands-on opportunity to explore, design and build using Magnetic Building Blocks, Tinker Toys, and other STEM kits.
While using the STEM materials, students will be exposed to Next Generation Science standard concepts while constructing roads, buildings, and bridges.
They will be able to use these tools to explore science and engineering concepts of push/pull, force, motion, and engineering.
Students will have opportunities to tie STEM learning to literature by building a bridge for the 3 Billy Goats to climb over or building a house that can withstand the huffing and puffing of the big bad wolf. Students will begin building the blocks for future STEM experiences throughout their education.
