My students are kindergartens in a Title I, public school in upstate New York. The school I teach in has an 80-90% poverty rate that fluctuates from year to year. Students and their families are frequently moving in, out, and back in again. Many of my students come from single family homes, have a parent in jail, or are being raised by a grandparent. In addition, many of the students come from homes where they were not exposed to literature during their younger years because their parents have limited reading abilities or did not have any books in the home.
