Kindergarten- It's Not All Fun and Games or is it?
My students need help in literacy and phonics. To help bridge the gap between English and their primary language, these hands-on materials provide a great way of learning for all my diverse students.
My students are in the heart of Key West, Florida. Our school is known as a Title 1 school. Some of my students have been displaced since the hurricane came through in September. My class is a unique group of individual students. There are four languages spoken in the classroom and some of the students are bi-lingual or tri-lingual. This dynamic is wonderful for our school and myself as I constantly learn from each student daily.
These children constantly are eager to try and explore new opportunities that are associated in the kindergarten classroom and school.
As a school we use different projects and invigorating ideas to help promote the curriculum in each grade level in our school. My goal is to try and help my students with different resources to promote a positive culture in the public school system and have these students develop a passion for learning and school.
My Project
I am requesting literacy centers for my class. I need one of the Teaching Reading Skills Activity Centers- Complete Set and the Phonics Magnetic Word Building Boards- Complete Set. These materials will be used daily to help with the different needs of students in the classroom. Students will use these activities to help them review/learn/assist them in learning concepts throughout the kindergarten curriculum. Kindergarten is based on sounds, blending sounds together, letters, and learning to read. With these materials, my students will achieve a higher level of reading and the foundation for literacy skills. My students will use these individually, in small group, and whole group. This will be a good assessment for themselves to see if they truly understand each concept and can make their own words by sounding out the words and blending them together. Hands-on materials is a great way for students to learn especially at a young age. What we try to convey and incorporate daily in our classroom and school, is learning through play!
My students learn in all different ways, these items will help students who need more of a visual and who benefit from kinesthetic learning.
The addition of these materials to the classroom would greatly benefit the students language, reading/comprehension, and writing skills. Some students have trouble with certain vocabulary in the English language. These activities will introduce new vocabulary and illustrations to help the students with literacy in kindergarten and the many years to come in their education.
