This is my second year at my school, and I absolutely love it. Our school is a low-income Title I school with a large Hispanic and African American population. I love teaching kindergarten and getting to be one of their first teachers!
When my students walk into my room, I want them to feel loved and to develop a lifelong love of learning.
Having materials where students can express what they know through learning and play creates a classroom environment where students feel safe to take academic risks and ask those hard questions. Students are innately curious and want to know more about their world.
Whether we are spending time in centers, listening and responding to reading, or diving in deep to solve the next math problem, being able to provide these students with the necessary materials to be their best selves is what I plan to accomplish with this project.
My Project
The first half of kindergarten is all about learning our letters and sounds. Then the second half we really start to read and build words. We work on reading sentences and stories, sounding out words, practicing sight words, and writing.
These materials will allow us to practice what we have learned during independent center times.
We will work on writing sounds to build words with the Pop and Match Phonics Games and using the touch and read CVC to build sentences and fluency.
The sequencing picture cards will be especially helpful for my English Language Learners. They can build their concepts of print by putting the pictures in order based on what would come next. Sequencing and retelling stories is a huge standard we work on in Kindergarten too!
Besides reading, we also work on adding and subtracting at the end of the year in math. The Pop and Add Game will be a fun way for students to practice their addition skills during math centers! I also plan to use the game in small groups too!
